History of Space at MGA Research Corporation

Since 1961, American companies have been working and preparing independently and alongside NASA towards the challenge of space exploration. The first step being accomplished in 1969 (Neil Armstrong moon landing), is considered a stepping stone to space exploration. NASA plans to return to the moon in 2024 using the most powerful rocket that will have ever been built. These efforts will ultimately lead to the first manned mission to Mars in 2030.MGA Research Corporation is proud to be a part of these unprecedented accomplishments in American space travel, having been performing testing for the Space and Defense Industry since as early as 1986 and continue testing products that are currently in space or will be in the future.

Since its inception, MGA has been able to quickly design and fabricate a specialized test or system through our Fabrication Center. With roots in the in the automotive industry, our current contributions have quickly expanded to numerous industries including the field of Space. Our experience has allowed us to convert a pneumatic impactor system used for crash testing to simulate the pyrotechnic event, or pyroshock, which occurs in a vehicle bound for space during liftoff or stage separation.  This follows one of MGA’s founding principles of optimizing existing designs to help solve new challenges faced by industry.  The impact system fires a steel, “puck,” or slug at an aluminum resonant beam.  The test article is affixed to this beam in all three of its coordinate axes to ensure that it will not only survive but perform optimally when exposed to the shock wave created by an event.  This pyroshock simulation system has progressed to the forefront of the development of rockets, satellites, and space capsules with leaders of the Space Industry.

MGA Research Corporation’s state of the art Pyrotechnical Shock Simulation system is widely considered the most repeatable, accurate, and fastest way to perform shock and PyroShock testing. The Space division has helped develop components for programs such as Endeavor, Orion, SLS, as well as many others, including satellites and rovers.  Our team’s effort has been recognized by NASA with the award of a mission patch for the work on the Space Shuttle Mission STS-111. 

 

 

Recent expansions include the addition of space testing to three other branches; Manassas, VA, Lincoln, AL, and Irving, TX.  MGA’s Texas branch began testing for the space industry in 2017 by performing pyroshock simulation testing for NASA’s Johnson Space Center which continues today. Texas operations were purposefully placed in one of the largest industrial zones in the Southern US to support the high volume of Aerospace and Defense customers in this region. This success prompted expansion into the Virginia and Alabama locations approximately a year ago. Located near Huntsville, MGA’s Alabama branch is among aerospace leaders, its primary focus is the development of lithium ion batteries with space application. Lastly, VA Operations being positioned near one of only four spaceports in the U.S., the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) on Wallops Island has allowed us to collaborate with NASA to ensure that their Fiber Optic Sensing System (FOSS), a patented award-winning technology, will function properly in harsh environments.
