History of Space at MGA Research Corporation

Since 1961, American companies have been working and preparing independently and alongside NASA towards the challenge of space exploration. The first step being accomplished in 1969 (Neil Armstrong moon landing), is considered a stepping stone to space exploration. NASA plans to return to the moon in 2024 using the most powerful rocket that will have ever been built. These efforts will ultimately lead to the first manned mission to Mars in 2030. MGA Research Corporation is proud to be a part of these unprecedented accomplishments in American space travel, having been performing testing for the Space and Defense Industry since as early as 1986 and continue testing products that are currently in space or will be in the future.

Noise, Vibration and Harshness – Buzz, Squeak and Rattle Testing at MGA Research Corporation

Over the last few years, buzz, squeak and rattle, or BSR, have been rated as one of the top quality issues for automotive companies. In addition to 3 Months of Initial Service (3MIS), long term durability of interior and exterior components is an important factor to consumers. Detection and correction of BSR issues before vehicle production can save billions of dollars in warranty costs for OEM companies and their suppliers. Every manufacturer has established their own set of requirements for a component to pass vibration induced noise or operation noise performance. MGA, with their decades of expertise in the automotive testing field, caters to these different test specifications to eventually achieve the objective of diagnosing unwanted sound inside a vehicle cockpit.

Dynamic Impact Usage in the Aircraft Industry

For the past 25 years, MGA has been a leader in testing for the Aircraft industry. Alongside major players in the aerospace industry, MGA modified and developed previous technology to create the inverted pendulum, also known as HIC (Head Injury Criteria) on a stick. This technology stemmed from the need to evaluate the performance of aircraft seatbacks and seat back components. This apparatus, accompanied with the free motion head-form (FMH), is used by MGA to test for blunt trauma as well as sharp or injurious edges per 14 CFR 25.785 (b) & (d) and ANM-03-115-32.

Seat Harness and airbags in aircraft interiors

MGA Research Expands the Equipment Fabrication Center

Starting in the early 1980s MGA began designing and fabricating equipment for the Automotive industry and soon after expanded into Aerospace, as well as Space and Defense equipment.  As we continue to grow as a dynamic and responsive testing services and equipment supplier, we have significantly expanded our design and fabrication footprint in Akron, New York. Our new 42,000 ft2 state-of-the-art facility has dedicated machining, fabrication, and painting areas along with ample square footage to house our equipment inventory. In addition, our facility has room for future expansion with plans to outfit a full-service checkout area for completed projects.

The Advancement of Aircraft Dynamic Safety testing at MGA

In the past 50 years, airplane manufacturers and regulators’ efforts in developing safer interiors have helped a steady decrease in airplane fatalities. Since the inception of the SAE AS8049 standard in the early 1990’s, MGA has supported the advancements of occupant safety in the aircraft industry. Our support, today, goes beyond the testing phase as we became active members of the SAE Aircraft Seating Committee and are constantly involved with the FAA training courses offered at the Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI). The committee sets forth recommendations for minimum structural and safety performances on aircraft interiors while CAMI ensures the industry is trained on recommended FAA practices.

The same safety standards that the OEM’s adhere to also apply to most altered vehicles on the road. MGA Meets the Needs of the Growing Automotive Industry in the Southeast

Since the 1990s, several major OEMs have taken up residence in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. The South has seen significant automotive growth with an approximate 300% growth in automotive manufacturing in Alabama alone, based on employment, since the year 2000. As the automotive industry has grown in the region, MGA Research has been there to meet its testing needs. With great success in both the government and private sectors, MGA began facility expansion in 2008 in order to support the industry trend, which has seen rapid expansion of automotive manufacturing in the Southeastern United States. This expansion in the Southeast started with our facility in Greer, South Carolina followed in 2014 by our green field facility in Lincoln, Alabama.

OMDB and the Future of Crashworthiness

Commercial Airliner Landing Gear Testing

Hydraulic frameworks are key factors in the aerospace industry and they are of no exception when it comes to testing. Through years of expertise and in-house equipment, MGA’s facility is able to provide structural, vibration and environmental testing designed to ensure the landing gear system can tolerate extreme conditions and load/vibration stress, all while maintaining accuracy to the consumer specification (RTCADO 160). RTCADO 160 is the standard for testing of avionics hardware.

Automated Airbag Deployment System

MGA has supported airbag deployment testing for decades. In order to further support particular specifications which call out a timing limit on deployments being conditioned, MGA developed an Automated Environmental Airbag Deployment System (AEADS).  With a single command, the chamber doors open, the track system removes the test sample from the chamber, and guides it to the specified location.  Once the sample is in the deployment position, the test is automatically performed.
